Takes Like Coffee: Jordan Hasay, Galen Rupp win big at USATF 20K Champs

By Chris Chavez

September 4, 2017

A few years back, my former colleague Mitch Kastoff used to round-up some of the day’s best headlines and provided a one-liner that was sometimes a joke, take or relatable Youtube video to go along with it. I miss it. I also miss Mitch a lot. So I’ve decided to bring it back and we’re going to call it, the Pre-Run Coffee Read. I’ll work this up every night before I go to bed so that you’re able to find it on the home page on Monday,Wednesdays and Fridays. This week will be an exception due to Labor Day so we’ll have back-to-back days to start. Joy!

I’ll do a regular mailbag every Tuesday so send over questions to chris@citiusmag.com or tweet at me @ChrisChavez.

CITIUS MAG Podcast drops every Friday and sometimes a bonus episode earlier in the week. We’ll have the Scott Fauble episode out on Wednesday so subscribe on iTunes.

Here’s what we have for the five top headlines going into Tuesday:

The Nike Oregon Project showed up to New Haven for a hard-effort workout for Galen Rupp and Jordan Hasay as they tune up for the Chicago Marathon next month. Hasay dominated in 1:06:35 and won by more than a minute over Aliphine Tuliamuk’s 1:07:49. Kudos to our own Becky Wade who finished fourth in 1:08:05. Rupp had a close call and won by just one second over Leonard Korir. Loyal Citwit Evan Schwartz was 18th in 1:03:35.

Sure, buddy.

Mo Farah will begin his transition to the roads by racing in the Great North Run half marathon (spoiler: It’s not a very strong field). What would you expect from a race in the UK, though. The U.S. will have Dathan Ritzenhein and Bernard Lagat but they’re nowhere near their prime to beat Farah. I am a little intrigued by Zane Robertson since he seems to put in some hard work in Kenya but he was a distant 16th in the world championship 10,000m. Furthermore, I’m a little surprised in one athlete’s omission from the start list. In a conversation that I had with Feyisa Lilesa, Mr. Lilesa mentioned he was aiming to run at The Great North Run and he is not entered. We hope he is not banged up and hope to see him racing soon.

The women’s field is much stronger and should have a crazy battle to the line with Vivian Cheruiyot and Mary Keitany. There are no Americans on the women’s side.

There’s been a lot of kind words and tributes to David Torrence shared in the past few days. Here’s a nice short one written by the aforementioned Fauble on remembering those that have been lost and appreciating those we’ve still got.

This was certainly one of the weirdest stories that I saw from the weekend: Cross country is all about getting messy! [h/t LetsRun]

We are less than a week away from the NYRR 5th Avenue Mile and Citius will have Paul Snyder, Justin Britton and myself in the media mile race. We currently have a prediction contest going with Roll Recovery going, where if you guess what I run then you’ll win one of their R3 foot rollers. Get those guesses in by tweeting your prediction to @CitiusMag with #RollCitius. Some tidbits to help you out? My personal best is 5:28 and my season’s best is 5:45.
