Emily Sisson Pulls Out Of 2023 London Marathon Due To Hip Injury

March 29, 2023

U.S. marathon record holder Emily Sisson announced that she will not be participating in the London Marathon on April 23 due to a hip injury.

What's the injury?

– Sisson revealed in an Instagram post that she suffered a hip injury during a workout several weeks ago.

She wrote: "I tweaked something in my hip during a workout a few weeks ago, and it just didn’t quite heal fast enough! I have taken a few days off since then & have been slowly increasing my runs—and things are feeling a lot better! Feeling fortunate it isn’t something a lot worse; just bad timing. Initially, I was pretty bummed, but I’m going to pivot to some shorter races this summer instead now!"

– She plans to return to the marathon later in 2023.

What it means:

– Sisson will not get to race on the same course, where she made her debut in 2019 with a 2:23:08 for sixth place.

– Her last marathon was her 2:18:29 American record at the 2022 Chicago Marathon. Her most recent race was a 48:26 victory at the USATF 15K Championships in Jacksonville on March 4.

Who else is running London?

– The London Marathon will still feature a phenomenal women's field, even with the absence of Sisson and Keira D'Amato, who also withdrew from the race due to injury. Brigid Kosgei, the world record holder for the marathon, is expected to go head-to-head against Yalemzerf Yehualaw, who has run a half marathon in 63:43 and a marathon in 2:17:23. Genzebe Dibaba, the world record holder for the 1500 meters, is also in the field after going 2:18:05 at last year's Amsterdam Marathon.
