Documenting Ethiopian Running Culture

By Jason Suarez

February 7, 2018

Hey friends. I don’t really blog too often on here because I’m best known for my photography. Pause. Take a second right now to follow me (@NotAfraid2Fail) on Instagram. I’ll wait…

OK. Now that you’ve done that, let me tell you a little bit about myself. I’ve been meaning to go on the CITIUS MAG Podcast with Chris to share a little bit of my background. The Sparknotes version? I was a sprinter in high school and college before pursuing a career in photography. I’ve lived in New York City for most of life. There is no better city in the world. FACTS ONLY. I’ve been able to travel quite a bit for photography and I’ve decided to get back into running but distance this time. Lemme tell you…it ain’t easy. Respect to all the runners who I’ve been taking photos of and running in countless circles. That endurance is crazy.

My latest photo gig has brought me to Ethiopia. Next week, I’ll be in Kenya.

It’s eye-opening. I recently went on an altitude training trip with the Black Roses NYC running crew in January but this totally different.

The best way to think about it is to picture the stereotypical New Yorker being dropped in the middle of Africa. It’s a culture shock and I’m here to entertain you while also learning about the people.

Here are just some of the tweets and posts I’ve been firing off while I find service out here:

Former collegiate runner and 1x marathoner. I take photos of people who run faster than me. Fun fact I used to work for the Maury show... All the stories are real.
