February 7, 2017

It’s a Tuesday in February and Genzebe Dibaba felt it was the right time to go out to Sabadell, Spain and record her seventh world record.

Dibaba won the 2,000 meter race in 5:23.75, which shattered Gabriela Szabo’s previous world best from 1998 by nearly seven seconds. The IAAF clarified that the 2,000 meters is not an official world record event indoors but Dibaba gets the world record because she also beat Sonia O’Sullivan’s outdoor mark of 5:25.36.

Dibaba now holds the outdoor 1,500 meter world record (3:50.07) and indoor world records in the 1,500 (3:55.17), indoor mile (4:13.31), 2,000 (5:23.75), 3,000 (8:16.60), two miles (9:00.48) and 5,000 (14:18.86). She races again on Friday at the Copernicus Cup in Poland but still has a long way to go before catching Ashrita Furman’s 551 official Guinness Records.
