Adam Goucher on ‘Running With the Buffaloes’ and the 1998 Colorado XC team – 20 Years Later

The CITIUS MAG Podcast

November 28, 2018

20 years after he won the NCAA individual cross country title, Adam Goucher joins the CITIUS MAG Podcast to take a trip down memory lane and re-visit that special 1998 Colorado Buffaloes team. The story of that team is captured vividly in Chris Lear’s book “Running With The Buffaloes.” We talk at length about that book and that team. If you haven’t read the book, I highly recommend it. In the interview, we hit on Colorado and legendary coach Mark Wetmore’s training philosophy, how vividly he remembers the national championship that was held in Lawrence Kansas. We also take some listener questions including the tough one…Adam has to assemble his all-time Buffs top 7.

Among the fun questions. There’s this excerpt from the book:

On the morning of the most important race of his life, (Goucher) writes, “I woke up pretty tired.” He has his traditional pre-race meal of Pop Tarts and Gatorade and then decides to walk to vent his frustrations and clear his mind.

Why was he waking up so tired? What’s going through his head on race day? Where did he start eating Pop Tarts and Gatorade as his pre-race meal. (A listener asks what’s his favorite flavor so we get that information as well)
