For more information regarding, the process of how I come to decide these ratings, please check out last month’s introductory post. Below you’ll see my rankings for each of the individuals competing at nationals. These are my projected NCAA individuals and it’s not necessarily the best 248 runners in the country. Due to injuries or shortcomings at certain meets, sometimes we see cases of runners that are very good but don’t make it to the big dance. It happens.
If you have any questions or complaints, tweet them at me: @Wood_Report. I’ve had a lot of fun taking your questions on where I projected your teams to finish at your respective conference and regionals. Let’s do it again. Ask me any NCAA Division I cross country runner and I will tell you where I have you projected to place at conference and regionals again.
First thing that I’d like to get out of the way – I mean ZERO disrespect to anyone with these projections. My idea is not to make anyone feel bad. If I put you in the 200 Club or last, it has no indication about how I view you as a human being. I just need to put someone there.

Rapid Fire Observations
We’ll go more in-depth on these individual projections in tomorrow’s Wood Report column but here’s a couple quick hitters to keep you entertained until then:
- Justyn Knight stays at the top after his win at the Wisconsin Invite but Grant Fisher isn’t too far behind him. It looks like it could be a nice rematch of the showdown in Madison.
- We excluded BYU from the initial pre-season rankings due to personal reasons and ties but Rory Linkletter, the NCAA runner-up in the 10,000 meters outdoors and the Blue Jeans Mile world record holder, enters the projections at No. 3.
- After much hype about the Alabama Crimson Tri, I’ve got Gilbert Kigen cracking the list at No. 4. His teammates Vincent Kiprop is back at No. 7 and Alfred Chelanga is back at No. 13.
- On the same note, here’s how Alabama would be scored: Kigen 4; Kiprop 7; Chelanga 13th; Short 232nd and Bull 245th.
- Yesterday, my rankings showed NAU over BYU by just two points. Here’s how that breaks down: NAU – Baxter 5th; Day 12th; Trouard 18th; Grijalva 33rd and Beamish 53rd. BYU would score: Linkletter 3rd; McMillan 17th; Clinger 22nd; Young 31st and Carney 49th. The difference here looks to be Tyler Day squeaking in between Baxter and Trouard.
- I’m sorry, Christian Alberico of Iona. Someone has to be last.
