Chicago Marathon organizers have announced the 2025 elite fields for this year’s race, scheduled for Sunday, October 12th.
John Korir, who won last year’s race in 2:02:44, will return to defend his title. Korir has hinted at possibly attacking the world record of 2:00:35 set by the late Kelvin Kiptum on the same course in 2023. Korir went on to win the Boston Marathon in April.
“I am confident that I will be able to defend my title at the 2025 Bank of America Chicago Marathon this October,” Korir said in a statement. “My training is going well, and I am focused on achieving another personal best time.”
On the women’s side, a new champion will be crowned as defending champion and world record holder Ruth Chepngetich has been provisionally suspended after testing positive for a diuretic.
Here are the full fields with some thoughts and takeaways at the bottom:

The John Korir vs. Jacob Kiplimo Matchup Could Be Epic
The press release states that Korir wants to run under 2:01:00, which would put him within striking distance of Kiptum’s world record. He’ll be pushed by five other men who have broken 2:04:00, but the most accomplished of the bunch is half marathon world record holder Jacob Kiplimo.
While we’ve seen track stars sometimes struggle in their marathon debuts (ie: Joshua Cheptegei), Kiplimo put together a strong run in 2:03:37 to take second in April’s London Marathon. (FWIW: Kiplimo’s half marathon world record of 56:42 is worth 1323 on World Athletics’ scoring tables, which is equal to a 1:59:46 marathon performance.) Kiplimo has opted to pass on the World Championships on the track to race the Buenos Aires Half Marathon later this month before continuing to train for Chicago.
Korir has a chance to assert himself as the world’s best marathoner, which feels like we’re always trying to assess each fall since there hasn’t been a super dominant figure like Eliud Kipchoge in recent years. Korir’s 2:04:45 in Boston was impressive but taking down a field of this caliber would definitely solidify his spot atop the pecking order.
Good News For Conner Mantz
If Mantz is targeting Khalid Khannouchi’s 2:05:38 American record, he’ll have plenty of company around him. Mantz has leveled up in 2025 and proved in Boston that he’s a contender for the podium at a World Marathon Major. To think that he can race the likes of Geoffrey Kamworor (someone who was once deemed the heir apparent to Kipchoge and has won two New York City Marathon titles) from the gun makes it feel more possible that he’ll cut some good time of Khannouchi’s record if training continues to progress and he shows up strong on race day.
Welcome Back, Galen Rupp
The last time the world saw Galen Rupp race a marathon was when he finished 16th at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials in February 2024. He turned 39 years old this past May and doesn’t appear anywhere close to calling it a career. He’s returning to Chicago, which is a course that probably fares him better than New York (which he DNF’ed in 2022). His record in his home state is very solid.
- 2017 – Wins in 2:09:20
- 2018 – 5th place in 2:06:21
- 2021 – 2nd place in 2:06:35
- 2023 – 8th place in 2:08:48
He just recently returned to racing and took 5th at Wharf to Wharf in 27:59 for the six-mile course.
The Next Ed Eyestone Marathon Star?
Casey Clinger, who wrapped up his time at BYU and signed a professional contract with Brooks, has stayed in Provo to continue working with coach Ed Eyestone as he shifts his focus to the roads. It’s a plan that’s worked out great for Conner Mantz and Clayton Young, who have been the two best American marathoners in the past three years. Could Clinger be setting up a Big Three that could contend for a sweep at the 2028 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials? It may be too early to make that call but he’ll get his first crack at the marathon in the same place where Mantz debuted and ran 2:08:16. The record for fastest debut by an American marathoner still belongs to Leonard Korir from his 2:07:56 set at the 2019 Amsterdam Marathon.
Women’s Elite Field
- 🇪🇹 Megertu Alemu (2:16:34)
- 🇪🇹 Hawi Feysa (2:17:00)
- 🇰🇪 Irine Cheptai (2:17:51)
- 🇪🇹 Bedatu Hirpa (2:18:27)
- 🇪🇹 Haven Hailu Desse (2:19:17)
- 🇰🇪 Mary Ngugi-Cooper (2:20:22)

No Ruth Chepngetich, No Problem
The Athletics Integrity Unit’s investigation into Ruth Chepngetich’s positive test for hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ) continues and no sanction has been handed down yet She opted for a voluntary provisional suspension, so the clock has already started on a ban if she gets a two-year suspension. Most recently, fellow Kenyan Judy Jelagat Kemboi was suspended two years after testing positive for HCTZ in an out-of-competition test from April. Unless the AIU finds evidence that Chepngetich was doping when she ran the Chicago Marathon last year, she will retain her marathon world record and the course record of 2:09:56 will hover over this race for a long time.
While the field includes five women who have run under 2:20:00, none of them has ever won a World Marathon Major. Irine Cheptai, who was third in last year’s race, is the top returner. This will be a good opportunity for someone to have a breakout and it could be a much closer race in the front as opposed to Chepngetich blasting it.
If you’re also wondering which athletes represented by Federico Rosa are in this year’s race, Chicago Marathon organizers have not announced any women represented by him in this year’s elite field. Jacob Kiplimo is the only Rosa-represented athlete on the men’s side.
A Good American Field
U.S. Olympian Dakotah Popehn is returning to the Chicago Marathon for the first time since she ran her personal best of 2:24:40 in 2023. Even after qualifying for the Games and taking 11th (originally 12th but upgraded one spot after an athlete biological passport violation by Kenyan-born Romanian Delvine Meringor), her PB has held up this entire time. Popehn has been vocal in the lead-up to the 2024 New York City Marathon and 2025 Boston Marathon races that she knows she can go faster. She struggled a bit in Boston and finished 16th in 2:26:09.
Lindsay Flanagan is making a return after running her PB of 2:23:31 and taking 9th in last year’s race.
Natosha Rogers will be making her World Marathon Majors debut after showing signs of adapting to the marathon well with a 2:23:51 for seventh place at the Nagoya Women’s Marathon in March.
Watch For Ejgayehu Taye
Just a year ago, Ejgayehu Taye was sixth at the Paris Olympics 5000m final and now she’s preparing to move to the roads. She boasts personal bests of 14:12.98 for 5000m and 29:50.52 for 10,000m. She was not named to this year’s Ethiopian team for the World Championships in Tokyo and now it makes a bit more sense as she’s preparing for her marathon debut. She won the RAK Half back in February in 1:05:52 and then swept both distance races at the inaugural Grand Slam Track meet in Kingston, Jamaica. She has not raced on the track since May. She’s looking to be the first Ethiopian woman to win Chicago since Tirunesh Dibaba was victorious in 2017.
