PUMA Elite’s Alex Maier, Taylor Roe Dominate USATF Half-Marathon Championships

By Chris Chavez

March 2, 2025

PUMA Elite’s Alex Maier and Taylor Roe, who also both attended Oklahoma State University, claimed their first national titles at the USATF Half-Marathon Championships, navigating near-freezing temperatures and biting winds in Atlanta.

Both athletes executed patient race strategies to win $20,000 and secure spots on Team USA for the World Road Running Championships in San Diego in September. The half marathon will be contested on Sept. 28th.

The Women’s Race

– Weini Kelati, who lowered her own American record to 1:06:09 in the half marathon in January, surged early, passed the 10K mark in 32:03 with an eight-second lead. Roe and Emma Grace Hurley worked together to close the gap by mile 8. Once they reeled in Kelati, they surged ahead and Roe pulled away in the final stretch to win in 1:07:22 – nearly 90 seconds faster than her previous best.

– Hurley finished second (1:07:35), while Amanda Vestri (1:08:17) took third and made her first national team.

Maier surged in the final mile, finishing unchallenged in 1:00:48 for a three-second PB.

What They Had To Say After The Race

Roe (via USATF): “It’s good news, but also bad news because this means I have another half marathon. I train with some of the best runners in the world. So I came in with the confidence today that no matter what the other runners did, it wouldn’t be anything I hadn’t faced in practice.”

Maier (via USATF): “Going in, I knew I had a good chance to make the team. So it was really about just trying to grab a top three spot. But when we got to 5K to go, I was feeling really good and decided to make my move.”

Who Gets The 4th Team USA spot for the World Road Running Championships half marathon squad?

The final Team USA spot in the half marathon for the World Road Running Championships will be determined by the World Athletics rank order in the half marathon. As of the rankings on Feb. 23rd, Bor is the top-ranked American but already has a spot locked in via his top three finish so the next-best American is Biya Simbassa, who was slated to run in Atlanta but scratched from the race. American record holder Conner Mantz is the third-highest ranked American (and could get a boost after he races the NYC Half on March 16th) but has previously said he may pass on the World Road Running Championships if he chooses to focus on an American record attempt on the marathon this fall.

On the women’s side, despite her disappointing sixth place finish, Kelati is still the No. 1 ranked American in the half marathon and can claim the spot for the World Road Running Championships.

USATF will go off the rankings on May 6th.

When Are The Other U.S. Championship Events?

The USATF Mile Championship will take place on April 22nd at the Grand Blue Mile in Des Moines, Iowa.

On May 3rd, the USATF 5K Championships will take place in Indianapolis, Ind.

For the mile and 5K, the top two athletes at the selection event who meet the eligibility criteria will compete in San Diego.
