Kenya’s Beatrice Chebet, the world champion in the road 5K, broke the women’s 5K world record in 14:13 at the Cursa dels Nassos in Barcelona on Sunday.
Here’s what you need to know:
– World Athletics has been keeping track of the road 5K world record since 2017.
– The previous women’s-only world record was 14:29 by Senbere Teferi and the previous women’s world record in a mixed race was 14:19 by Ejegayehu Taye.
– Taye finished second in 14:21. Kenya’s Lilian Kasait Rengeruk took third in 14:26.
– This capped a very strong 2023 season for Chebet that included: a gold medal at the World Cross Country Championships, a gold medal in the road 5K at the inaugural road running championships, a bronze medal in the 5000m at the World Championships in Budapest, a win at the London Diamond League, a 14:05.92 personal best and runner-up finish at the Diamond League final in Eugene (which puts her at No. 3 on the all-time list) and a world-leading 8:24.05 for 3000m outdoors.
– Switzerland’s Dominic Lobalu won the men’s race in 13:12.
– This caps an incredible year in women's distance running with new records in: 1500m, mile, 5000m (2), road 5k (2), road 10K and marathon. (via CITIUS MAG’s Owen Corbett)
