Olympic medalist Josh Kerr of the Brooks Beasts claimed victory in the New Balance Fifth Avenue Mile, shattering the course record that had stood for 43 years. The Scotsman clocked an impressive 3:44.3, surpassing the previous record of 3:47.52 set by Sydney Maree in 1981. On the women’s side, Bowerman Track Club’s Karissa Schweizer matched Laura Muir’s 2022 course record with a winning time of 4:14.8 in the women’s pro field.

Here’s what you need to know:

Men’s pro race:

– Kerr, who recently earned a silver medal in the Paris Olympics 1500m and raced three days prior in the Zurich Diamond League 1500m, successfully defended his Fifth Avenue Mile title from 2023.

– Kerr's race strategy was spot-on: he stayed out of the early chaos, allowing Empire Elite’s Eric Holt to lead through the halfway mark. Kerr made his move shortly after and quickly distanced himself from the competition, ultimately winning by four seconds.

– The runner-up spot went to Josh Hoey, who unexpectedly finished in 3:48.9 in his road mile debut, while Puma Elite’s Amon Kemboi took third with a time of 3:49.3. The top five was rounded out by Dark Sky Distance’s Vincent Ciattei (3:50.6) and Germany’s Robert Farken (3:51.9).

– 17 of the 19 men who finished the race ran under the four-minute mark.

Women’s pro race:

– As a top-ten finisher in the 5000m and 10,000m at the Paris Olympics, Schweizer’s Fifth Avenue Mile victory was somewhat unexpected. She proved her versatility beyond her usual focus on the longer events by running 4:14.8 to equal Laura Muir’s 2022 course record. It was her first time contesting the Fifth Avenue Mile.

– Early in the race, she stayed with the front runners, breaking away from the pack when Dark Sky Distance’s Susan Ejore and Puma Elite’s Dorcas Ewoi made their moves for the halfway bonus of $1000. Schweizer confidently led the final stretch and held off Ewoi to claim the win.

– Ewoi finished second with a time of 4:17.3 while Ejore ran 4:19.0 to take third. Great Britain’s Melissa Courtney-Bryant finished fourth in 4:19.9 and Puma Elite’s Gracie Morris surprised many with a fifth-place finish in 4:20.4.
