Fred Kerley Suspended For Whereabouts Violations By The Athletics Integrity Unit

By Chris Chavez

August 13, 2025

Fred Kerley, the two-time 100m Olympic medalist and 2022 World champion, has been provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit for whereabouts failures.

Three missed anti-doping tests or filing failures over a 12-month span can carry a penalty of one to two years.

Kerley’s lawyer, Howard L. Jacobs, issued the following statement about their intent to appeal the suspension: “Fred Kerley has already notified the AIU that he intends to contest the allegation that he has violated the anti-doping rules related to whereabouts failures, as he strongly believes that one of more of his alleged missed tests should be set aside either because he was not negligent or because the Doping Control Officer did not do what was reasonable under the circumstances to locate him at his designated location. Fred will not comment further at this time out of respect for the process, and looks forward to presenting his case to the appointed hearing panel.”

The AIU has not shared specific details on when Kerley’s missed tests occurred.

Kerley’s 2025 year to forget

– On Jan. 2nd, Kerley was arrested and faced a felony charge of battery on a law enforcement officer and misdemeanor charges of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct following a confrontation with multiple police officers in Miami Beach. Police later released body camera footage of the altercation. Police officers also shared that Kerley was facing charges for allegedly strangling his wife in a May 2024 incident.

– On Feb. 11th, Kerley pleaded not guilty to the charges and was released on bond.

– May 2nd, Kerley was charged with touch or strike battery after his ex-girlfriend and U.S. Olympian Alaysha Johnson alleged that he hit her in the face while at the meet hotel before the two were slated to compete at Grand Slam Track: Miami. According to the police report, Johnson says they got into an argument and then Kerley struck her in the face with a closed fist, which caused her nose to bleed. The league suspended Kerley for the Miami and Philadelphia meet. Kerley also pleaded not guilty.

– Kerley still resumed training and competing. He went on to run a season’s best of 9.98 at a low-key meet in California. He competed at the Rabat and Rome Diamond League meets in May and July but never finished better than third place.

– On July 29th, Kerley announced that he was withdrawing from the U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships. He wrote on Twitter: “The 100m should be a straight sprint. 2025 has presented many hurdles. Taking some time out to get back on track.”

– On Aug. 12th, the AIU announced its provisional suspension due to whereabouts failures.
