Fred Kerley vs. Noah Lyles To Race 60m At New Balance Indoor Grand Prix

By Chris Chavez

January 10, 2024

2022 100m world champion Fred Kerley and 2023 100m world champion Noah Lyles are set to face off in the men’s 60m at the 2024 New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on Sunday, Feb. 4 at the TRACK at New Balance, race organizers announced on Tuesday.

Here’s what you need to know:

KERLEY VS. LYLES

This will be the first time these two U.S. sprint stars face off indoors. The race will be Kerley’s first-ever 60m indoor race. Lyles is the defending champion and roared to a 6.51s personal best at last year’s meet. Lyles owns the head-to-head advantage over Kerley with a 3–2 record.

Fred Takes Indoors

Kerley’s last indoor race was on Jan. 24, 2021, when he ran 45.03 for 400m at the American Track League meet in Fayetteville, Arkansas. That was the start of his transition from the 400m to the 100m, where he later went on to earn an Olympic silver medal. A year later, he upgraded to gold at the 2022 World Championships. This past year, he struggled to find his rhythm and was eliminated in the semifinals of the World Championships and finished the year with a season’s best of 9.88s. At the end of the year, he decided to move to Los Angeles and start working under coach Quincy Watts.

The Matchup We Didn’t See In Budapest

Because of Kerley’s shortcomings, we never got to see Lyles and Kerley race in 2023 despite trading barbs at the pre-race press conference in Budapest. Their last head-to-head race was the 200m final at the 2022 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships, where Lyles won in 19.67s and Kerley took third in 19.83s.

What Noah Said About Fred

“He tried the double. It’s hard to do the duality of mixing the two (events). Whatever he’s learned, he’s probably going to take into the next championships with a huge fire and saying. ‘I’m going to make sure they know that I am the one.’ Especially with him having that silver (from 2021)...I get off on knowing people are coming.”

How to watch

The New Balance Indoor Grand Prix will be broadcast on NBC from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. ET on Sunday, Feb. 4.
