Grand Slam Track has confirmed Miramar/Miami, Florida, as one of the four sites that will host one of the weekend Slams in the professional track league’s inaugural season in 2025. The Slam will be held at the Ansin Sports Complex on May 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.
Here’s what you need to know:
– Ansin Sports Complex hosts the Miramar Invitational (a World Athletics Continental Tour silver label meet) and has attracted top sprint talent annually as an early-season meet. In 2023, Sha’Carri Richardson ran a wind-aided 10.57 for 100m.
– In June, Grand Slam Track announced Los Angeles as one of the four host cities. Kingston was confirmed Monday as the host city for the league’s first Slam at the National Stadium at Independence Park on April 4th, 5th, and 6th.
– Ansin Sports Complex has a seating capacity of over 5,000, and it is expected that Grand Slam Track organizers would add more temporary seating to the venue for the three days. Commissioner Michael Johnson tweeted there are plans for "adding additional seating, premium hospitality and fan zone."
– Grand Slam Track Miami will also overlap with the F1 Miami Grand Prix, which will be held at the Miami International Autodrome, which is constructed around Hard Rock Stadium.
– Grand Slam Track’s events will take place over three days with athletes racing twice. Athletes will receive points for their finishing position in each race. The athlete with the highest points total after both events will win the Slam and the $100,000 grand prize.
– Tickets will go on sale on Friday, Dec. 6th at 10 a.m. Eastern Standard Time.
– A television broadcast and streaming partner has yet to be announced.
What They Had To Say:
Commissioner Michael Johnson: “South Florida knows how to host big events, and that’s exactly what we’re bringing with Grand Slam Track. This region has a real passion for sports, and I’m confident the energy here will make it a memorable experience for both the racers and the fans. We’re building something special, and Miami is going to be a huge part of that.”
Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam: “We are thrilled to have been selected as one of the host cities for the inaugural season of the Grand Slam Track. This event will not only showcase our city's state-of-the-art facilities but also provide an opportunity for our community to come together and celebrate the spirit of sportsmanship."
What Miami Means For The League
Former 100m World champion Fred Kerley has been clamoring for a meet in Miami for years. In 2022, he tweeted: “When we going to la New York or miami” and “We need to have world champ in Miami.” Kerley is one of the first Racers signed to the league and will finally get his wish with the 2025 Grand Slam Track season.
Professional runners based in Florida frequently open up their seasons at college meets in the state that offer no appearance fees and little to no prize money. Grand Slam Track offers up an opportunity to race against the best and get a lucrative pay day to start the season.
Grand Slam Track’s Miami stop overlaps with the Shanghai/Suzhou Diamond League on May 3rd, which could mean fewer Americans flocking to China for less competitive prize money. The Diamond League has yet to announce how their $500,000 total prize money will be distributed at each series meet.
League organizers have yet to announce the final Slam location or the date of the Los Angeles meet.
