Hellen Obiri, Galen Rupp To Run Houston Half On Jan. 14

December 22, 2023

New York City Marathon and Boston Marathon Champion Hellen Obiri and two-time Olympic medalist Galen Rupp will run the Houston Half Marathon on January 14.

Here’s what you need to know:

– Obiri says she plans to do some half marathons as part of her preparation for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. She was named a finalist for the Kenyan Olympic marathon team selection. She said, “I have been living in the United States for a while now but even when I was in Kenya, I know that Houston is a very good race with a fast course. I want to run the marathon at the Olympics in Paris so to run some half marathons is an important part of my preparations.”

– Rupp will use the Houston race as preparation for the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials on February 3, where he will try to make his third consecutive U.S. marathon team and fourth consecutive Olympic Games appearance.

– Obiri won the RAK Half Marathon in February with the fifth-fastest half marathon time in history (1:04:22).

– Rupp is coming off an eighth place finish in 2:08:48 at the Chicago Marathon in October.

– According to LetsRun, if Rupp runs 60:47 or faster in Houston, he could improve his World Athletics Ranking to No. 64. If he is in the Top 64, he would unlock a third spot for the U.S. Olympic team hopefuls at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials. At the moment, the United States only has two spots unlocked after Conner Mantz and Clayton Young ran under the Olympic standard at the Chicago Marathon. The top two at the U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (assuming they have run under 2:11:30) will qualify for the Paris Olympics. The third spot would be determined on April 30 based on the World Rankings when the Road to Paris list unlocks athletes No. 65 to 80.
