Hocker vs. Kerr vs. Nuguse vs. Ingebrigtsen: Olympic 1500m Final Rematch Set For Zurich Diamond League

By Chris Chavez

August 15, 2024

Zurich Diamond League organizers announced 1500m Olympic gold medalist Cole Hocker, Olympic silver medalist Josh Kerr, Olympic bronze medalist Yared Nuguse and 5000m Olympic champion + 1500m fourth place finisher Jakob Ingebrigtsen will race the 1500m on Thursday, Sept. 5th.

Here’s what you need to know:

– This will be the first clash with all three Olympic medalists and Ingebrigtsen since Paris. In the Olympic final, Hocker shocked the field by passing Ingebrigtsen on the inside as Kerr and Ingebrigtsen battled down the homestretch. Hocker dropped three seconds off his personal best to set an Olympic record of 3:27.65 and became just the fourth American man to win gold at the Games.

– Whereas Ingebrigtsen was the one who set the pace for the Olympic final, the Zurich Diamond League will be a bit different as organizers will have a pacemaker for 1000m and Wavelight technology to set the pace.

– Hicham El Guerrouj’s world record of 3:26.00 from 1998 may be in jeopardy.

– Last year in Zurich, Nuguse picked up his second Diamond League victory by beating out Josh Kerr 3:30.49 to 3:30.51. Kerr was just coming off his World Championship victory in Budapest.

– Ingebrigtsen and Hocker are also set to race the 1500m at the Lausanne Diamond League next week (Aug. 22).

– Hocker has never won a Diamond League race.
