Olympic 1500m champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen will try to get his first outdoor world record when he races the two-mile at the Paris Diamond League on June 9.
Here’s what you need to know:
– The current record is held by Daniel Komen who ran 7:58.61 in July 1997. He is the only man in history to have run back-to-back sub-four-minute miles.
– The closest anyone has come to the record in recent years was Joshua Cheptegei running 8:07.54 to win the 2019 Prefontaine Classic.
– Ingebrigtsen is coming off a 3:32.59 victory in the Oslo Diamond League ahead of the On Athletics Club duo of Yared Nuguse (3:33.02 PR) and Olli Hoare (3:33.39). It was his first race since winning gold at the European Indoor Championships in March.
– Ingebrigtsen, Nuguse, and Hoare will race the 1500m at the Oslo Diamond League on June 15.
– In February 2022, Ingebrigtsen got his first-ever world record with a 3:30.60 for the indoor 1500 meters. Afterward, he said: “I want to improve and run faster than I have done before. It’s everyone’s dream to win championships and beat records. This is my first world record; hopefully more will come, but this is a big dream come true.”
Our take:
Jakob has the medals to his name and the next thing on the list to cement himself on the list of all-time greats is to chase outdoor records. This is a good one to start with.
