Timpview High (UT) senior Jane Hedengren lowered her own U.S. high school mile record in 4:23.50 at the HOKA Festival of Miles in St. Louis on Thursday night.
Here are the most impressive stats from the race:
– Hedengren won the race by 12 seconds as Montgomery (CA) senior Hanne Thompsen finished second in 4:35.63. Thompson is now No. 8 on the U.S. high school girls outdoor mile list.
– Hedengren took the win wire-to-wire and split: 64.77 for 409m; 2:11.26 for 809m (66.48 for the second lap); 3:16.46 for 1209m (65.20 for the third lap); 4:23.49 (67.03 for the final lap) for the finish. Hedengren split 4:04.68 for the 1500m, which is faster than her 4:07.68 personal best set en route to her indoor mile record. She was just shy of Mary Cain’s 4:04.62 U.S. high school 1500m record as a high school junior from 2013.
– Hedengren was nearly six seconds faster than Christina Aragon’s 4:29.38 winning time in the women’s professional mile.
– The previous U.S. high school girls outdoor mile record was 4:28.46 by Ventura (CA) senior Sadie Engelhardt from this same meet in 2024. Hedengren lowered it by 4.96 seconds.
– Hedengren’s run was also 0.61 seconds faster than Mary Cain’s 4:24.11 from an indoor race at Boston University in January 2014, when she was competing as a professional at 17 years old. However, because she was not competing as a high schooler, Track and Field News does not recognize that as the high school record. It was the previous U.S. U20 mile record. Hedengren now owns the U.S. high school record indoors (4:26.14) and outdoors.
– The time puts Hedengren at No. 1 on the U.S. U20 outdoor mile list. She surpasses Alex Efraimson’s American U20 outdoor mile record of 4:27.39 from Sept. 2016.
– Hedengren is now No. 20 on the U.S. all-time women’s mile list.
– The NCAA outdoor mile record is 4:25.50 set by Oregon’s Şilan Ayyıldız in April. Hedengren ran two seconds faster. Ayyıldız’s NCAA indoor mile of 4:23.46 is just slightly faster.
– Hedengren is now No. 110 on the World all-time women’s mile list.
– Hedengren moves to No. 3 on the all-time world U20 list behind Ethiopia’s Birke Haylom, who ran 4:17.13 in June 2023, and Great Britain’s Zola Pieterse, who ran 4:17.57, 4:22.96 and 4:23.14 in the summer of 1985.
This outdoor season, Hedengren has clocked personal bests of 2:05.96 for 800m (at altitude in Provo), 9:34.12 for two-miles, and 14:57.93 for 5000m. Hedengren is slated to run the two mile on June 8th in Seattle, Washington.
