Julien Alfred Wins 100m Paris 2024 Olympic Title

Olympic glory for Julien Alfred! On a rainy day in Paris, the 23-year-old from Castries, St. Lucia, crossed the line first in the women’s 100m final in a blistering time of 10.72 seconds. Alfred turned heads with an easy-looking 10.84 clocking in the semifinal, and backed that up by breaking her own national record again in the final. World champion Sha’Carri Richardson took home silver in the first Olympic final of her career, running 10.87, and her training partner Melissa Jefferson earned bronze – her first individual global medal – with a time of 10.92 seconds.

Here’s what you need to know:

- Alfred’s medal is the first in Olympic history, in any sport, for St. Lucia. The island nation of less than 200,000 people has sent 36 athletes to the Olympics since their first in 1996. With this latest national record of 10.72, Alfred now owns the 30 fastest 100m times by a St. Lucian runner in history.

- Richardson took home silver in her first Olympic final. A wet track may have caused some issues with the 24-year-old’s start, but she still equalled the highest finish by an American woman in this event since 2000.

- Jefferson impressed throughout each round at these Olympics, and ultimately landed on the first individual podium of her career. This bronze caps off a great first season for Jefferson with Star Athletics under coach Dennis Mitchell. Alongside Richardson and TeeTee Terry, Mitchell’s group finished 2-3-5 in Paris.

- Five-time World and two-time Olympic champion in this event, Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce of Jamaica, ran the T-second-fastest time in the heats (10.92), but pulled out of the competition prior to the semifinals. Fraser-Pryce has said that these are her last Olympic Games. She could still run the 4x100m next week.

Here's what they said:

"It feels amazing, to be honest. This morning, I wrote it down, 'Julien Alfred: Olympic Champion.' I think that believing in myself and knowing I could do it is what really mattered to me."

- Julien Alfred on the emotions of becoming an Olympic Champion.

"It means a lot to me. I did World Indoors as well, so I definitely knew that St. Lucians would be watching and hoping that they could get their first Olympic medal, so I'm sure they're celebrating right now."

- Alfred on becoming the first ever Olympic medalist from St. Lucia.

“Those are my girls, my sisters, and at the end of the day, I told them that no matter what happens, I always have their back and I know they have mine. We all just wanted to come out here and put on our best show and I feel like for the most part we did that.”

- Melissa Jefferson on herself and training partners Sha'Carri Richardson and TeeTee Terry all making the 100m final.
