The Athletics Integrity Unit has announced that Ethiopia’s Tsehay Gemechu was provisionally suspended for the use of a prohibited substance/method (Athlete Biological Passport).
Here’s what you need to know:
– Gemechu ran 2:16:56 to finish second in March’s Tokyo Marathon. She is No. 9 on the all-time list. She debuted with a 2:18:59 for third place at the 2022 Amsterdam Marathon.
– The 24-year-old was slated to run the Valencia Marathon this weekend in Spain before being removed from the start list before the AIU’s announcement.
– Gemechu was one of Ethiopia’s top talents on the track with a fourth place finish at the 2019 World Championships 5000m final. She competed at the Tokyo Olympics in the 10,000m but was disqualified for a lane infringement. She was at this summer’s World Championships in Budapest but dropped out of the marathon. She boasts personal bests of 14:29.60 for 5000m, 30:19.29 for 10,000m and 1:05:01 for the half marathon.
