How Julien Alfred Dominated the 2024 Season and Became Saint Lucia's Olympic Hero

By Anderson Emerole

October 17, 2024

In just her first year as a professional, Julien Alfred is walking away from a historical season with Olympic 100m gold, Olympic 200m silver, and the World Indoor 60m title to her name. At the 2024 Paris Olympics, Julien became the first athlete in Saint Lucia's history to ever win an Olympic medal in any sport. Saint Lucia, which gained independence in 1979 and made its Olympic debut in 1996, has produced world-class athletes such as the country’s first Commonwealth medalist Dominic Johnson in the pole vault and first Olympic finalist Levern Spencer in the high jump, but Julien’s Olympic breakthrough was a monumental victory for the nation of 180,000 people. CITIUS MAG’s Anderson Emerole reflects on Julien’s dominant 2024 track campaign and her rise as Saint Lucia’s Olympic hero, including a look back on the country’s rich history in the sport that set the foundation for Julien to become the national icon that we know her as today.
