By Chris Chavez

January 8, 2024

The Magic Boost, an experiential training program for up-and-coming storytellers in track and field, is pleased to announce its Class of 2024.

The following content creators were selected from an impressive pool of nearly 200 applicants. Throughout the application process, program board was particularly focused on creatives who use their interview and conversational skills to highlight the unique personalities and experiences of athletes.

These seven individuals all showcase strong communications abilities, knowledge of the sport of track and field, impressive on-camera experience and the creative personalities to elevate content and capture the attention of the next generation of fans.

MEET THE CLASS OF 2024

Serenity Douglas is a former NCAA All-American and two-time Big 12 champion while at Texas. You can currently find her on the air on KYTX CBS19 in East, Texas but still finds her way to many meets across the country as a freelance sideline reporter, emcee, and color commentator.

Robert Hooper is a sophomore at Tennessee State. When he’s not running anything from 400m on the track to 8K on the cross country for the Tigers, you can find him on TikTok offering his thoughts on the latest track and field news via @RobHoop (33.5K followers) or @CITIUSMAG.

Taylor Mascetta is a distance runner for Syracuse University while pursuing her master’s in broadcasting and digital journalism at the Newhouse School. Taylor previously attended Fordham University, where she worked for an NPR-affiliate radio station, WFUV, as a sports commentator. She is also an announcer at the Armory Track and Field during the indoor track season.

Olumide Olamigoke is a 2016 Olympian, coach, and multifaceted content creator. After representing Nigeria in the Rio Olympics, he shifted his focus to mentoring the next generation of athletes how to create successful careers both on and off the track. He does this primarily through his work from behind and in front of the camera, as a photographer, videographer, and director.

Denise Spann is a journalist, creative producer and host of Speak Your Piece – a talk show designed to be a safe space for athletes. Through her work, she steps outside of the mainstream to remind the audience of the stories around them. A former sprinter at Michigan State University, she uses her experience to connect with athletes and fill the gap in traditional coverage.

Colin Waitzman pushes content via Track World News – his Instagram page dedicated to sharing the latest news and his own opinions to the masses in bite-sized chunks. Over the past three years, Colin has attended and covered major events including the Millrose Games, ’22 World Championships, New Balance Indoor Grand Prix, American Track League and more meets in North America.

Taylor Woods is a former sprinter and jumper for UConn who holds a Masters degree in Sport Management. While in Storrs, she ran student productions for Sports Xtra covering all athletics for the Huskies. She was also a sports anchor intern at WTNH-TV in New Haven.

What is the Magic Boost?

The Magic Boost vision is a track and field media landscape where those covering the sport reflect and resemble the athletes competing in the stadium: youthful, diverse, and innovative. The program aims to revolutionize how the stories of track and field and its elite athletes are told, where they are told, and by whom they are told. This is accomplished through virtual and in-person exposure to industry experts and leaders as well as on-the-ground access at competitions across the United States and around the world.

The Magic Boost was established in 2021 and has served 31 Boosters from 2021 to 2023 – 81% of whom are BIPOC or women.

The new class of Boosters will kick off their programming at the 116th Millrose Games in New York City. They will be producing content throughout the indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, with the program capstone taking place at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene.

In addition to recruiting a new cohort of content creators, the leadership team is fundraising for future classes. All contributions to the Magic Boost are tax deductible. If you are interested in supporting the program and its participants, please email themagicboost@gmail.com.
