2024 Nuttycombe Invitational: Parker Wolfe, Sadie Sigfstead, BYU’s Men and Washington’s Women Claim Victories

By Chris Chavez

September 28, 2024

Some of the top schools in the country got their first glimpse at Thomas Zimmer Championship Course this season at the 2024 Nuttycombe Invitational. The historic and challenging course will play host to the 2024 NCAA Cross Country Championships in November.

Here’s what you need to know:

– The women’s race saw a breakout performance by Villanova junior Sadie Sigfstead, who notched the biggest cross country win of her career with a 19:55.7 for the 6K course. She was 71st at last year’s NCAA Cross Country Championships but won the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional. On the track, she boasts personal bests of 15:44.11 for 5000m and 32:45.56 for 10,000 meters. She pulled away from Penn State junior Florence Caron (2nd in 20:03.2) and Gonzaga senior Rosina Machu (3rd in 20:06.2) after the 4K mark.

– The Washington women, who are ranked No. 5 in the latest USTFCCCA coaches poll, took the victory with 110 points. They were led by junior Maeve Stiles, who finished eighth overall in 20:17.9.

– North Carolina’s Parker Wolfe, the NCAA Outdoor 5000m champion and U.S. Olympic Trials 5000m final third place finisher, opened up his year with a 23:04.0 victory. It beat the previous course record of 23:09.9 set by Stanford’s Ky Robinson in 2022. He led the Tarheels to a fourth place team finish. His teammate Ethan Strand took seventh in 23:25.4.

– The BYU men’s cross country team took the win in the Championship A Race by putting four men in the top 10. (Casey Clinger, 4th; Joey Nokes 6th; Creed Thompson, 8th and Aidan Troutner, 9th) They finished the day with 44 points – 106 ahead of runner-up Iowa State. Wake Forest took third with 150 points.

– Many teams will return to Madison for Pre-Nationals on Oct. 19th.
