Athletics Kenya Announces Six-Person Shortlist For Olympic Marathon Teams

By Chris Chavez

April 4, 2024

The Kenyan Olympic Committee has cut down its shortlist of potential marathon competitors for the Paris Olympics from 10 to six athletes. Two-time Olympic champion Eliud Kipchoge and reigning Olympic champion Peres Jepchirchir are still in consideration for this year’s team.

Here’s what you need to know:

– Whereas the United States uses a trials race to determine its six people competing at the Olympics, Athletics Kenya has a committee that weighs World Marathon Major performances and recent races to select their respective teams.

– In December, a provisional list of 10 men and 10 women were announced. Marathon world record holder Kelvin Kiptum was planning to race April’s Rotterdam Marathon in an attempt to break two hours in a record-eligible race but died in a car crash in Eldoret, Kenya alongside his coach Gervais Hakizimana in February. Kiptum was just 24 years old.

– Athletics Kenya will judge the athletes based off their performances in this spring’s slate of marathons.

Who made the women’s shortlist? (Note: Their wins since the Tokyo Olympics)

– The six-woman shortlist was comprised of: Hellen Obiri (2023 Boston and New York City Marathon champion); Peres Jepchirchir (2021 Olympic champion, 2021 New York City Marathon champion, 2022 Boston Marathon champion); Sharon Lokedi (2022 New York City Marathon Champion); Rosemary Wanjiru (2023 Tokyo Marathon champion); Ruth Chepngetich (2021 and 2022 Chicago Marathon champion)

– Joycilline Jepkosgei, Sheila Chepkirui, Judith Jeptum Korir, Seley Chepyego Kaptich did not make the cut on the women’s side.

Who made the men’s shortlist? (Note: Their wins since the Tokyo Olympics)

The six-man shortlist was comprised of: Eliud Kipchoge (2022 and 2023 Berlin Marathon champion and former world record holder at 2:01:09 from 2022); Benson Kipruto (2022 Chicago Marathon champion and 2024 Tokyo Marathon champion); Alexander Mutiso Munyao (2023 Prague Marathon champion and 2023 Valencia Marathon runner-up); Timothy Kiplagat (2024 Tokyo Marathon runner-up) and Vincent Ngetich (2023 Berlin Marathon runner-up and 2024 Tokyo Marathon third place finisher)

– Evans Chebet (2022 and 2023 Boston Marathon champion, 2022 New York City Marathon champion) was still not part of Athletics Kenya’s list. A recent report out of Kenya quoted him as saying, "I am ready if the call comes” but has yet to receive any communication from the committee. He will be going for his third consecutive win at the Boston Marathon on April 15th.

– Bernard Kiprop Koech, Geoffrey Kamworor, Cyprian Kotut, Amos Kipruto and Titus Kipruto did not make the cut on the men’s side. Alexander Mutiso Munyao has been added after his 2:03:11 in Valencia.

What are Eliud Kipchoge’s chances of being selected?

– Kipchoge is the most famous marathoner in the world and would make history as the first person to win three Olympic gold medals in the marathon. Despite his 10th place finish at the Tokyo Marathon in 2:06:50, where he was more than four minutes behind winner Benson Kipruto, he was named to the Kenyan shortlist of six athletes. Kipchoge is 39 years old. Paris would be his fifth Olympics.
