Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay has decided to only run the 1500m and 5000m at the Paris Olympics, according to a Facebook post by her husband and coach, Hluf Yidhego. The news was first reported by Ethiopian journalist Bizuayehu Wagaw.

Here’s what you need to know:

– Tsegay was initially entered in the 1500m, 5000m and 10,000m – which would have replicated the triple attempted by the Netherlands’ Sifan Hassan at the Tokyo Olympics, where she came away with gold medals in the 5000m and 10,000m along with a bronze in the 1500m.

– Yidhego wrote on Facebook: “The hero Gudaf Tsegay who won two medals in one World Championship in 5000m (gold) and (1500m) silver, even though (she) has the ability to compete in 3 distances in the Olympics to raise the name of her country, has asked the Ethiopian athletics federation to compete in two distances. She will only compete in the 1500m and 5000m according to what they have arranged for her.”

– Tsegay exclusively ran the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympics and earned a bronze medal. Last summer, she won the 2023 World Championships in Budapest in the 10,000m.

Her schedule (Paris local time):

– Friday, Aug. 2nd – 5000m heats at 6:10 p.m.

– Monday, Aug. 5th – 5000m final at 9:10 p.m.

– Tuesday, Aug. 6th – 1500m at 10:05 a.m.

– Wednesday, Aug. 7th – 1500m repechage round at 12:45 p.m. (if needed)

– Thursday, Aug. 8th – 1500m semifinal at 7:35 p.m.

– Saturday, Aug. 10th – 1500m final at 8:25 p.m.
