The Houston Half Marathon, one of the deepest and most competitive half marathons in the U.S. each year, kicks off this Sunday on January 14. Top distance runners from across the world will take on the streets of Houston as they battle for the $60,000 prize purse.

Names to watch for on the men’s side include Olympic Marathon bronze medalist Galen Rupp, Abel Kipchumba of Kenya, Jemal Yimer and Milkesha Mengesha from Ethiopia, and Wesley Kiptoo of Kenya. In addition to Rupp, other American athletes to keep an eye out for include Biya Simbassa, Sam Chelanga, and Frank Lara. Another name likely to be in the mix includes Olympic silver medalist and eight-time national record holder for Canada Moh Ahmed, who will be making his half marathon debut in Houston.

On the women's side, 2023 Boston Marathon and Chicago Marathon champion Hellen Obiri will headline the half marathon. She’ll compete against other top athletes such as Edna Kiplagat of Kenya and Lonah Salpeter of Israel. Former half marathon record holder for the U.S. Sara Hall will also be racing, alongside other top Americans such as Nell Rojas and Weini Kelati, who will be making her half marathon debut.
