Domestic Violence Charges Dropped Against Fred Kerley: Full Legal Timeline

By Chris Chavez

January 15, 2026

2x Olympic 100m medalist Fred Kerley's charges of domestic battery with strangulation and strong-arm robbery against his wife from May 2024 have been dropped.

The charges of battery on an officer and resisting arrest in Miami Beach from January 2025 were dismissed on the condition that he take an anger management course.

The following is a statement from his lawyer, Richard Cooper:

"The domestic violence charges were dismissed outright. The State of Florida, fortunately, saw what the responding detectives originally found that day in May of 2024: my client never touched this woman. My client is excited to put this behind him and focus on winning races and making our nation proud."

Background:

– In January 2025, Kerley was arrested in Miami Beach on charges of battery on a police officer and resisting arrest. The incident was captured on camera and shared on social media. Kerley remained in custody longer due to additional charges related to an alleged domestic violence incident involving his wife from May 2024. He was formally charged with domestic battery by strangulation and strong-arm robbery in connection with that alleged incident. A judge ordered him to have no contact with his wife and to stay away from her.

– Kerley’s estranged wife, Angelica Kerley, told CBS News Miami that an alleged violent assault took place in front of family members and their children, including an instance where she says he choked her to the point she feared for her life. She said the incident marked a turning point in their relationship and that she has sought a divorce, which she claims Kerley has resisted. Angelica Kerley told the court that despite initially being asked by the defense to speak on Kerley’s behalf, she wanted to proceed with pressing charges.

– Kerley was released from jail after posting his bond.

– In May 2025, Kerley was arrested in Dania Beach, Florida, just days before racing at the Grand Slam Track meet in Miami. He was charged with battery after allegedly punching his ex-girlfriend, U.S. Olympian and hurdler Alaysha Johnson, in the face.

– According to a police report, Kerley approached the woman at a hotel where athletes were staying. The two argued, and she alleged Kerley struck her with a closed fist, causing her nose to bleed. He was arrested by Broward County police and later released. The league suspended Kerley. He is set to go on trial for that charge on Feb. 17th, 2026.

– Kerley missed the 2025 U.S. Outdoor Track and Field Championships and thus the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo.

– In August, Kerley was provisionally suspended by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) due to a whereabouts violation after missing three drug tests in 12 months. Kerley, through a lawyer, is appealing the charge, arguing that at least one missed test should be dismissed due to lack of negligence or inadequate attempts to locate him.

– The Athletics Integrity Unit has yet to announce how long Kerley will be suspended for.

– One month later, Kerley became the first track athlete to sign with The Enhanced Games, a start-up, Olympic-style exhibition event that will allow its competitors to take performance-enhancing drugs. The event is promising a $1,000,000 bonus if an athlete can break Usain Bolt’s world record in the 100 meters.
